September 22nd is World Car Free Day and about 70 university students in Xiamen rode bicycles to publicize this meaningful day during the weekend.
At 9:30 September 20th, over 70 students from Xiamen University and Jimei University gathered in Bailuzhou music square and rode bikes to the Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Centre by three routes.
These students hoped this activity can give citizens a better understanding of World Car Free Day and let them go out by buses, bicycles and walking on September 22nd Tablecloth.
But many citizens in Bailuzhou music square had no idea of World Car Free Day, while some of them didn’t care even if they knew.
“It is unrealistic to live in the city without cars. The quick pace of modern life doesn’t allow us to do this.” said a citizen.
The campaign to restrict driving is modelled on a similar programme initiated by 35 cities in France on September 22, 1998. World Car Free Day was established by the European Commission in 2000 and was adopted by more than 1,000 cities Bread Basket.
In China, the event began in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province, in 2001. Public transport and bicycles were the only vehicles allowed on the streets, and buses passing through the area were free for residents.
